Model Context Protocol Gateway (MCP Gateway)

What Is an MCP Gateway?

An MCP Gateway is a dedicated layer that gives organizations visibility and control over their Model Context Protocol servers and interactions, functioning as a central security and governance point for MCP traffic specifically. It monitors MCP usage in real time, from sanctioned integrations to unauthorized or unknown "shadow MCP" servers connected without approval, and enforces policy across all of them rather than relying on each integration to secure itself. As MCP adoption grows and agents connect to a widening set of tools and data sources, this becomes the practical way to manage that surface instead of securing each connection individually. It also keeps an audit trail of MCP interactions for review after the fact.

Why It Matters

  • Visibility: identifies all MCP servers in use, including unauthorized or unknown ones.
  • Enforcement: can block unauthorized actions and enforce policy across MCP traffic in real time.
  • Auditability: maintains a record of interactions between MCP servers and clients for review after the fact.

FAQ

An AI Gateway covers any model traffic broadly. MCP Gateway is scoped specifically to MCP servers and the tool-calling traffic that flows through them, a narrower, more specialized version of the same pattern.

An MCP server connected to an AI client without formal approval or visibility, the MCP-specific version of Shadow AI. It can carry the same governance risk: high privileges, no oversight.

Model Context Protocol (MCP)

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, originally developed by Anthropic, for connecting LLMs to external tools, systems, and data sources through a single interface rather than custom integrations for every connection.

AI Gateway

An AI gateway is a centralized layer between an organization's users or applications and the AI models or services they call, letting security teams monitor, control, and secure that traffic from one place instead of instrumenting every application separately.

Model Context Protocol Server (MCP Server)

An MCP server is the component that gives an AI model or agent the ability to actually do something, read a file, call a function, run a command, rather than just talk about it.
